Experiencing Korea’s UNESCO World Heritage
Seowon, mountain temples, royal tombs and hanok villages — Korea’s UNESCO World Heritage and the programs that bring them to life.
Korea is home to a wide range of UNESCO World Heritage — from Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple to Jongmyo Shrine, Changdeokgung Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, the Hahoe and Yangdong villages, the mountain temples (Sansa), the Korean Seowon and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. The World Heritage label can feel distant, but many of these sites are tied to hands-on and guided programs anyone can join. At a Seowon you can take part in Confucian rites and readings, at a mountain temple a temple stay, and at a hanok village traditional daily-life experiences. Reading a little about why a site was inscribed makes the visit far richer.
